A historical storage building made of brick with a “glass crystal” on top. In addition to the concert halls, the Elbphilharmonie in Hafencity accommodates a public plaza, a hotel, three restaurants, parking levels, and 45 luxury apartments. Opened at the end of 2016, it is already a unique landmark for the city of Hamburg in every respect.

The 132m2 spacious apartment is located on the 18th floor of the Elbphilharmonie. Its fantastic view on the river Elbe and the gigantic harbor complex is an extraordinary experience by itself. The shipping and boating activity plays like a movie and paints a mesmerising atmosphere. The south-west oriented apartment is characterized by its floor-to-ceiling glazing with an incised terrace, allowing a breath-taking view. We took this as our inspiration to transform this unique “harbor panorama” visually into the depths of the rooms.

We achieved this transformation by creating a transparent, open room sequence throughout the apartment with kitchen block and cabinet stand freely adjusted like a “container”. Always aiming to bring the impeccable harbour view as far inside as possible.
The sliding doors, made out of profiled cast glass, enabled the fusion and separation of the adjacent room zones. According to the residents’ wishes and daily rhythms, each room zone can be increased or reduced to capture the space to its best ability. The different daylighting and artificial lighting ambiences provide always new and surprising room atmospheres. Black parquet, basalt stone, steel and various glass surfaces take on the aura of an industrial harbor atmosphere in the figurative sense. The colour design supports this idea with a broken orange tone for the freestanding kitchen “container” and captures the scene. Furniture by Jean Prouvé, Charles Eames, and Gae Aulenti present the apartment in a luxurious way and allow the greatest comfort.
